I've been thinking about Hexagram 35 – and especially how it shows up as a relating hexagram.

Introducing Hexagram 35

The name of this hexagram is 'Advancing', or 'Progress' or 'Flourishing'. The oldest form of the character seems to show arrows in their sheath:

Those arrows – along the text of the oracle – suggest readiness to seize whatever opportunities present themselves and make things happen. LiSe Heyboer sums it up well:

"Prosperity does not arrive by itself, it visits the people with the right attitude. The one who always carries along arrows is probably the only one who comes home from a walk with a rabbit for dinner. The lord of Kang grasped the opportunity of a gift to breed a meadow full of horses. The first one who sees a gap in the market builds up the multinational. Grasp the small chances, do not wait for the big one to arrive, stay alert with eyes and ears and hands ready, and a quiver filled with arrows."
The Lord of Kang has his story told in the Oracle:

'Advancing, Prince Kang used a gift of horses to breed a multitude.
In the course of a day, he mated them three times.'
Prince Kang was the younger brother of King Wu, rewarded for helping him. He was made Lord of Kang after the Zhou conquest, and then also Lord of Wei as a reward for his military role during the consolidation of Zhou authority. Perhaps 'Advancing' could be a military advance? ('Kang' wasn't known to be someone's name until it was found in bronze inscriptions in the 1920's, which is why Wilhelm translates simply 'the powerful prince'.)

The gift of horses is also a sign of royal favour and trust – and Kang, breeding the horses, makes the most of this.

Hexagram 35 is the inverse of 36, Brightness Hiding. This also tells the story of a virtuous lord, Ji, who was neither recognised nor rewarded, and had to hide his light for fear of persecution. The contrast is clear – and the Zagua, the Wing of contrasts, says that Advancing means daylight while Brightness Hiding means punishment.

'Daylight' is apparent in the trigrams of 35: fire and light above the earth. Comparing the fate of Kang to the equally-virtuous Ji, we might think of the English expression, 'your day in the sun'. In such times, mate the horses to breed a multitude, carry arrows ready to seize your opportunities, seize the day, make hay while the sun shines. Hexagram 35 does not mean, 'Work on your tan.'

This is the kind of hexagram you might think of as 'positive' (if, that is, you hadn't read Bradford's excellent post on the subject of 'Positive and negative hexagrams'). So... what happens when 35 is the relating hexagram?

35 as relating hexagram

That is... what happens when your cast hexagram is moving to 35 – when the changes in the answer reveal 35 in the background? It might be an attitude or tendency; it might well be a 'positive thinking' kind of mindset, that always asks, 'What is the gift in this situation, and how can I make the most of it?'

Of course, a full answer to this question would involve looking at 63 possible readings... but let's try just six of them, the ones where a single line changes to 35. Here they are:

21.1 > 35

'Shoes locked in the stocks, feet disappear.
Not a mistake.'
64.2 > 35

'Your wheels dragged back.
Constancy, good fortune.'
56.3 > 35

'Traveller burns down his resting place
Loses his young helper.
Constancy: danger.'
23.4 > 35

'Stripping the bed by way of the flesh.
Pitfall.'
12.5 > 35

'Resting when blocked.
Great person, good fortune.
It is lost, it is lost!
Tie it to the bushy mulberry tree.'
16.6 > 35

'Enthusiasm in the dark.
Results bring a change of heart,
No mistake.'
Maybe not as sunny as we might expect?

These lines seem to me to belong in pairs, corresponding to the three 'layers' of a hexagram: lines 1 and 2 (earth realm), 3 and 4 (human) and 5 and 6 (spirit). I'll have a look at how Advancing shines through each of these.

Earth (lines 1 and 2)

21.1

'Shoes locked in the stocks, feet disappear.
Not a mistake.'
The traditional view on this line – which I like – is that someone who has made a minor error is being stopped in their tracks before they can do anything worse. The stocks keep you out from running into trouble.

Since this changes to 35, we can ask, how is this the Advancing of Biting Through? What's the opportunity in Biting Through that someone might seize and make the most of in this line?

Surely it's having time to think: the opportunity to reflect, and make some progress in understanding. To make a connection with truth. So let's make the most of biting through – since we can do nothing else, let's learn something.

64.2

'Your wheels dragged back.
Constancy, good fortune.'
This is very similar to line 1, isn't it? What's the opportunity in being Not Yet Across? Not to have to rush into crossing; not to lose control of your momentum and be sent crashing down the bank into the river. So let's make the most of not being across the river – let's protract the crossing, take more time to think, be as safe as we can be while still moving forward.

These two lines, down in the 'earth' realm, obviously share a theme of festina lente (make haste slowly). To 'seize the day' at ground level doesn't mean making stuff happen; it means accepting what is happening, and engaging with that. Here we are, getting into the basic conditions of the situation. How might these be an opportunity, or how might we engage with them to open out that opportunity? (How can we make lemonade while the sun shines?)

If you compare the reading where lines 1 and 2 change to reveal 35 – 38.1.2 to 35 – I think you see similar themes: slow down and see what's real; accept that and find the best way to engage with it.

Humanity (lines 3 and 4)

In these two lines, having an attitude of Advancing turns out to be not such a great idea.

56.3

'Traveller burns down his resting place
Loses his young helper.
Constancy: danger.'
Here I am at a resting place on my journey – what's the opportunity here? How can I make the most of this? Let's get a really good blaze going and warm the place up!

(oops)

Another layer of meaning in this line (one LiSe found) is that it can be the moment when the traveller decides to go on alone. Burning down the resting place, forfeiting the helper – this is like 'burning your boats', a way to express your confidence in your journey. And that's also in the spirit of Hexagram 35: onward! No looking back!

('Constancy, danger' in that case would make this one of those lines that says, 'This strategy will work this time, but it wouldn't make such a good guiding principle.' 35.6 is another of those.)

23.4

'Stripping the bed by way of the flesh.
Pitfall.'
What's the opportunity in Stripping Away? To get rid of everything that's old and redundant! Let's make the most of this good, sharp knife! Out with the old! Onward!

(ouch)

Stephen Field associates hexagram 23 with the story of Heng and Hai, which would make this a terrible contrast between two pairs of brothers. Kang supported Wu, and was rewarded. Heng betrayed Hai to the authorities and had him chopped into bits – only to suffer his own come-uppance later, at the hands of Hai's son.

So... a 35, make-the-most-of-it approach in the realm of human nature can be a destructive force. 'Make hay while the sun shines'? You can have too much fire, and too much scything.

Advancing in the human realm seems to mean identifying with the 'time' of the hexagram – not in the sense of conscious choice ('What might a traveller encounter? Where do I want to arrive?'), but just getting stuck in. And if we look at the two-line change of the human realm to 35 – 52.3.4 to 35 – then I think we're looking at two ways of identifying with stillness, or identifying as still. (Not just 'I'll keep my feet still,' or 'I'll keep my mouth quiet,' but 'I am still'.) And this is not straightforward, although it could be beautiful.

Heaven (lines 5 and 6)

In the spiritual/mental realm of lines 5 and 6, we might expect to see more awareness and more choice...

12.5

'Resting when blocked.
Great person, good fortune.
It is lost, it is lost!
Tie it to the bushy mulberry tree.'
How can you make the most of being blocked? What's the opportunity in that?

Well... there's the opportunity to have a rest.

Although we might also be inclined to 'make the most of' the drama ('it is lost!'), ultimately we're learning to be philosophical about how things are. Sometimes things naturally flow our way and our ideas bear fruit; sometimes, they don't. And when they don't, this is an opportunity to reconnect with the natural pace of growth and change: tie it to the mulberry. (This opportunity is so well-hidden that it's also tucked away in the nuclear hexagram of 12: 53, Gradual Progress, the hardy tree growing on the mountain.)

16.6

'Enthusiasm in the dark.
Results bring a change of heart,
No mistake.'
You can imagine Hexagram 16 – Enthusiasm, imagination on a grand scale – multiplying with the vigorous, optimistic engagement of 35. You'd surely have technicolor imaginings – but they're still in the dark. Real-world results will make a difference.

I think this is a line of animal enthusiasm and energy: dancing and moving on in the dark (in all senses of the phrase), because you'll only learn where you are by moving and creating change – maybe succeeding, or maybe running headlong into a pit or two. Is this wise? Hardly... but then, is wisdom really called for? It's no mistake to be in motion – better, surely, than sitting down and brooding. Enthusiasm in the dark actually contains the opportunity to go beyond enthusiasm into understanding.

So in this realm, there does seem to be more of a conscious choice to participate in the full nature of the time: when Blocked, to rest and bind to the growing mulberry; to maintain the energy of Enthusiasm even in the dark, and use it to carry you further. Again, comparing the two-line change: 45.5.6 to 35 does enter fully into the spirit of 45, by investing everything, holding nothing back – 'leaving it all on the field'. And... mightn't the cry of 'It is lost! It is lost!' or the 'change of heart' be accompanied by 'Sighs, tears and snot'? I get the feeling from all three readings that this higher-level Advance is led by full emotional engagement.

Summing up...?

Clearly, having 35 as relating hexagram, that eager 'make the most of this!' mindset, isn't the most reliable guide. It seems to work well when the original situation (the cast hexagram) is one that might slow you down and give you pause for thought – 21, 64 or 12 – something that puts obstacles in the way of Progress. (6.2.5 to 35 is another good one.) Asking, 'What's the gift in this? What is there here to work with?' in such times is a help. When the situation has its own momentum, Advancing might multiply it – and it could run away with you.

Receiving the same answer/hexagrams for two different questions. How to deal?

Hello, I asked yi- "What is his intention for me?" and Received Hexagram 1- The Creative with changing lines 2 and 4 Changing to 37- The Family. I then asked yi- "What is the best way to deal with X?" and received hexagram 1- the creative with changing lines 2 and 4 changing to 37, again! I then asked "How does X see me?" and received hexagram 15- Modesty changing lines 4 and 5 changing to hexagram 31- Wooing. Brief background - I was dating a guy and had cut off our contact about 6 months ago - due to lack of taking the next step to commitment on his end. This has happened at least twice in the past. He has a habit of contacting me again and coming back around. Each time he does- he leads me to believe that he is interested in the commitment. But alas, I quickly find out for myself that he is not ready. So this last time, I resolved to cut him off yet again. I am not one to stick around and hope for someone to "change". It's been almost six months since we have spoken. - I am usually good at reading and interpreting my answers however, I am a bit confused on this reading. Who is the great man I must meet? I am guessing that line 4 is about being left alone in the open to take chances? I am trying to relate the answers to my questions about X. Any suggestions or guidance on these readings would be much appreciated!

32.3 > 40 House purchase question

Hello,
I made an offer to buy the house that I've been renting for many years. My landlord accepted the offer and so I had an attorney draw up the formal purchase agreement and sent that to her. She has not signed it or responded to phone or email inquiries yet. I'm hoping she is not changing her mind or planning to back out of the deal.

Yesterday, I asked 'How can I best approach this situation?' and got 32.3 > 40
Line three speaks of a lack of solid commitment and that's hard for me to relate to because I've taken all appropriate steps and am prepared to move forward with the deal. Could this relate to her commitment changing?

Today, I asked 'What going on with this house purchase?' and got 37.1.2.3.5.6 > 7
It certainly seems like a lot going on with all the changing lines, but I'm uncertain what it indicates and what guidance I might take from this.

Any insights will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

hexagram 44.2.4.6>39 relationship

I would like to ask you about hexagram 44. I received 44.2.4.6 to 39 and my question was: What can I do in a practical way to find a partner?
I am on a dating site and there are some nice guys around me at work. Right now I don’t feel any of them close to me but we spend time together. My instinct says though that none of them is my man because I just don’t feel it, I don't trust them, conversation just doesn't flow. But I try to get to know them better. I don’t want to be too closed and selective.

I was reading interpretations about 44 and in one of the interpretation I found:
44 suggests that you are currently too strong and unruly to marry - too demanding of your man in bed (2), over work (3), and his likes (4) - until he blows up (6).

And other:
Hex 44.2 be of good cheer and don't let someone's bad mood bring you down.
Hex 44.4 be polite and courteous to all you meet.
Hex 44.6 if you meet up with a tedious and tiresome bozo, walk away and take no notice of them. :)

I also found this:
https://www.yijing.nl/i_ching/hex_33-48/hex_e_44.htm
For 44.2 says that one should preserve himself from a mixture of influences, then 44.4 is about being too unapproachable.

I think 44 has also connotations to temptation and adultery. It seems so complicated that actually I don’t understand it at all.

Thanks a lot for any opinion, I would be very greatful to receive any.

if my family and I go to Greece?

My family and I are planning a trip to Italy for 2018 and wanted to stop by Greece first. So I asked IC what the outcome would be of that. Hmmmm...

Sounds like it's a growing experience that's difficult at the start ...that kinda frightens me because not all growing experiences are fun or easy!!
That's really all I can figure and doesn't really help me in my decision....
Perhaps it's reflecting my difficulty in making the decision to go and in the end if we go then we learn/grow from it.
Any thoughts?

End of a long time friendship

Hello, my best friend of 14 years decided to cut our friendship off last year. I have had a difficult time in dealing with this. I miss this person very much and do not understand why she decided to end our friendship. She also ended her friendship with two other mutual friends of ours at the same time. When I ask- she did not give me any reasoning. I recently asked yi- "What is happening between X and I? Show me a picture. I received hexagram 39 "Obstruction" with changing line 4- Six in the fourth place means: Going leads to obstructions, Coming leads to union. Changing to hexagram 31, "wooing". My guess is that yi is saying- do not attempt friendship at this point- as this person is not receptive to you. Also to gather friends of like mind and try to overcome to obstruction together. Reading 39 indicates "wooing" and two people coming together in union. Does this mean she will want to be friends again eventually? Or is this indicating a marriage? The creepy thing is that I received this same exact reading and changing lines a year ago when she ended our friendship! Your thoughts and comments are appreciated in helping me with this reading!

I decided to move on from the situation
https://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/frie...ram-14-3-gt-38
because it's all just too confusing and in limbo and something I don't need at all. I'm looking for stability and security on all levels as my life's been all over the place for too long now.

However as soon as I was feeling detached and moving right along I happened to run into him and I could see he couldn't get enough of spending time with me and kept making excuses to keep standing there and talking to me and a reason to give me a hug or a kiss on the cheek....eventually I said if you want hang out properly let's do that otherwise I'm heading home to get some things done - he opted (after another 5 minutes of excuses to keep me there) to not officially hang out. I mentioned to him about someone saying he's not a nice guy to do what he did to me and he said 'What it got to do with them what's going on between us' Huh but there's nothing going on between us from what I can see - I feel like he's holding back haha don't you???!!

What do I need to know about the reason he's holding back

Hexagram 19.1>7

This just looks like he's being disciplined in his approach but no further information.

Job Concern.. Did I get it?

Hi all,

I am reposting parts of this in the hopes of receiving some feedback. I deleted the previous post, because it was brought to my attention that I had unintentionally used an offensive term in my post.

Anyway, here goes again!

I have been job hunting for quite some time. It has been really slow this summer. I finally got an interview with a great company. It seemed like I nailed the interview, and the interviewer basically made it seem like I got the job. The interviewer asked me when I could start and if I had discussed my rate with HR. I told him that I had and that I could start tomorrow or Monday (this was Thursday). I sent him a thank you email as well.

Well, Friday rolled around, and I did not receive any paperwork (as he said would be sent), confirmation of the job or job offer. I am concerned.

I am extra concerned, because things like this seem to be happening to me frequently lately. Things are super tight financially, and I'm getting very worried.

Anyway, the readings were:

"Do I have the job at X?" Answer: Hexagram 43
I'm hoping this is the breakthrough of finally getting a job..

"Will I get the job at X?" Answer: Hexagram 25.4.5
Have read this a couple of ways.. could it be a pat on the head not to worry?

"Why haven't I heard from company X?" Answer: Hexagram 18 changing to 4 (I have forgotten the changing lines) This seems like a mistake was made, but I can't imagine it was mine. I am also more than qualified so don't understand the receipt of hex 4.. could it be that the front desk woman (who was supposed to send me paperwork) is new or inexperienced and made the mistake??

I would really appreciate your insights! To add fuel to my worry (and for you astrology buffs out there) I recently realized that Uranus JUST moved into my 6th house of work. Now I know this can indicate upsets and sudden change. But it can also indicate innovation/technology. The firm I am hoping to work with is a web design firm. So maybe there is hope??

Thanks in advance for your help!

:bows:

Hi,

I asked, "How can I have more fun?" as I currently have a lot of spare time while my life goes through transitions. I received 56.4 [Wanderer] to 52 [Keeping Still]. The fourth line intrigues me, because it says that even if I travel, I won't be at rest, but be preoccupied.

I suppose it could be true, because it's difficult to truly immerse myself in travel if my life back home is still up in the air. So, is the second hexagram 52 saying that I should keep still instead, and rest?

Thanks for your help.

Hi everyone,
I just submitted my application for pharmacy school. I am feeling anxious! I asked I Ching what my chances are of getting accepted. I casted 50.1.2.4.6 to 36.

Line 4 seems very discouraging but since it came with 3 rather positive lines, I'm not sure how to interpret it. Any ideas?

I have asked how would it benefit me to rejoin (a particular gym)

Hexagram 50.2>56

Transformation looks good and are readily available BUT what is it that would stop me being able to make use of them....weird!

The fact that Hexagram 56 The Traveller is here also and the Line 2 in 50 speaks of eny - that wouldn't surprise if people were envious of my life, particularly the owner. It would be almost 12 months since I last went there and I'd imagine they're still doing the same old, same old. I used to belong to this gym but left because where I travelled didn't have franchises, well they don't have much in the outback really.

Should i sign the lease with the new tenant? Hex 12.1.4.5 to Hex 27

My current roommate is a messy person who has a live in girlfriend. I'm still looking for another job but the landlord is giving me trouble and this seems like the only way out of this frustration. I'd rather not be on a lease at all but it might be harder to find 2 new tenants for September.

Not sure what hexagram 12 says there are some obstacles but it works out. Hexagram 27 a source of funds or money is needed?

Should I postpone signing lease to find 2 new tenants instead? Hex 38.1.2.5.6 into Hex 45.

Hexagram 1 says not to pursue it, but other lines indicate some progress and gathering in the end. Not sure if it works out though.

Hello Hilary and Clarity Community, thank you for welcoming new members. I apologize for no paragraphs; my original text contains them and I tried to put them in but they won't appear.

I am an American of part-Chinese descent, so I grew up familiar with the Yi, and use it. I also use Mah Jongg to do Gong Hay Fat Choy readings. Both are casual. I consider myself a raw beginner! I am hopeful you new friends can help me with a hexagram and line the Yi gave me about a friendship that feels as if it could become a significant romantic relationship, but I cannot trust because others similar to it in the past disappointed me greatly, and my heart is still broken and closed because of it.

I hope I am doing this right, this is my first hexagram presented to your team for shared examination with me... here goes:

Question: (more of a statement) "That does it, this man and I are over. I hate him and I don't trust him. He'll hurt me, he has been sent as a cruel joke to disappoint me. Besides, I don't need a man. I've been alone 50 years. I'm fine with spending the rest of my life alone. Take this man away. I will find better things to make me happy. "

Yi's reply: Hexagram 38 line 6 > 54. I read corresponding lines, so I consider 54 to be 54.6.

The Situation Behind This Reading: I am 50 and, obviously, part-Asian. I am also part another race that Americans generally despise. I am said to look young, and I am often presumed in my 20's. But I'm also less than bone skinny. I'm not fat, I am more "average". I could lose 10-15 pounds and then I'd look acceptable in American terms. I'm reluctant to do this because I think altering your personality or body for a romantic partner is unwise and won't last.

So here I am, less than The Perfect Blonde American Girl, which most men I am attracted to seem to prefer. I on the other hand have a very specific physical type I am attracted to. I wish I didn't and have even tried hypnosis to change it because I never successfully interest this type of man. But there it is. Three separate times, I have been or worked near a man who fits this physical look. Each of the times, he did not return my affections. Each of the times, a blonde American girl was involved, and that is whom he later chose.

So I swore such men off and have been alone. To get over the last one, I went overseas to Shanghai and spent a year there in meditation in a remote place (tough to do in busy Shanghai). I didn't meet anyone interesting while there. Demoralized and convinced I am a forever alone girl, I returned to America. This is where I met the fourth man who fits the type I am interested in. He seemed immediately flirtatious and interested. But he is married. I swore him off and have been incredibly mean to him but I can't help it. I want him to go away. He tells me about his blonde American wife in great (unsolicited) detail. I reply nothing back except wishing them both the best. He gives me gifts, he compliments me, he tries to sit beside me, he flirts, whatever. I hold back and stay back. After all, he is married therefore off limits. Worst of all, yet another blonde thin American girl is his wife. I feel like life has slapped me with this but I am bearing it stoically.

Last night, I lied on a popular social medium that I have a boyfriend and love him forever, and posted a picture of an ex. This fourth man often visits my page and I know he saw it. He fell silent immediately and has been sulking quietly. I feel I scored a bulls-eye and am determined to send out more messages calculated to chase him away. I feel he is a trap presented to me by (hate to say it but) a cruel universe and it is my job to teach both it and him and lesson by proving I can walk away this time.

I did the above reading, telling the Yi that I want no part of this man. There is a weird strong feeling in the pit of my stomach that this fourth man actually is "meant" for me and I am ruining a fated relationship. But I just can't help it. Every man I've ever liked who looked like this man devastated me. Each one rejected me then paraded a blonde as their choice instead. This one's not only married (unhappily but who cares), but to an almost IDENTICAL BLONDE to all the others.

My interpretation of reading: 38.6 - The Yi is telling me actually this man would be good for me and there is an element to this situation, especially his marriage, I do not see. I am advised to wait it out and do nothing, because being catty, unfriendly and mean as I am doing accomplishes nothing and will not prevent a fated alliance from occurring anyway. However: 54.6 (corresponding line) - The relationship is doomed to fail in the end anyway. So then why would the Yi advise me to let it happen and be involved in it? Any thoughts?

By the way, I have asked the Yi about this man six times now in three months. Uncannily, every response has been 38.6. I also do see him as "a pig covered in mud" and "a wagon full of devils". How eloquent is the Yi! My opinions of this man are he's a jerk, a philanderer, a "typical male", a pig, a bas---d, a potential as---le, and absolute poison and danger. Yi nailed it. I know this was long. I am a writer and long-winded. Thank you for bearing with this. I am angry at being tested and want this man GONE. I keep trying to hurt him and chase him away but nothing is working. Why would I be sent a married man? Apologies again for the lack of page breaks. I tried.

Almost two months ago, my ex disappeared on me after saying that his mind is in a hundred places, that he has no explanation for how he's feeling, and that it'll take a while but he should eventually be back to normal.I sent him messages of encouragement after that but when I asked him if we could please talk, he blocked me everywhere. This, of course, has left me confused about everything. It is utterly insulting but at the same time there is a lingering thought that he might be very sick, and even though things didn't work out, I'd still like to end things peacefully.I am obviously very confused as I still have feelings for the person so I resorted to I ching. It just ended so abruptly that I have a hard time letting things go.Should I wait for him? 35.1.5>25Should I answer his old emails? 3.1.5>2Thanks in advance for everyone's insights.
