56.3 to 35 I want to steal a cat!

Dear All,

Here's my situation:

I'd been living for some years in the suburbs. There, I had my two cats. They were spending days roaming outside or eating and sleeping at my place. There was also another cat, own by people living in a nearby house. The cat wasn't allowed inside their house and soon he started coming to my place, too. Knowing it's theirs, I didn't want to feed him, but we let him sleep in the hallway when the winter came.

Fast forward, the owners left for summer vacation (two months), leaving the cat behind. So I started to feed the cat as well. Next year it happened again, and after two years the cat felt more mine than theirs. Even though he loved spending time outside, he'd come to eat and sleep every day. At the same time, he might not even show up at their place for several days.

Recently, I had to move. I did my best to find a place that would be good for cats (green, far from busy streets, with cats friendly owners). My two cats found the new place surprisingly well. They're not scared at all, just curious about their new surroundings, they like the people living there etc. But I had to leave the other cat behind.

My other neighbour asked the people to give their cat to me, but they declined, saying it would hurt their daughter.

The thing is, their daughter likes cats very much, but she just likes them in pictures. She treats them like dolls. Perhaps she's too small to have a cat. I once offered to teach her how to treat a cat, but noting came out of it.

The cat in questions doesn't like the girl, and scratches her when she wants to pick him.

The cat used to have a sister. It was a little kitty who liked children and being petted. Such a cat should be kept inside. So after some time the kitty found herself a new home with nice kids in the neighbourhood, but when the owners learnt about it they demanded to have the kitty returned. She stayed around for maybe 4 days, and then left again to find herself another home. She moved to a terrace of a man who was allergic to cats, so he couldn't keep her. She kept looking until she was hit by a car. When the vet called the owners, they told him to let her die.

Several weeks ago they returned from vacation with a new kitty, and that one, too, soon moved to our hallway. So much for the context.

I moved out on Sunday. The cat knew I was moving out and that I took my other cats with me. I had to return again to fetch my remaining things on Monday and Tuesday. On Monday he ran to me when he saw me coming and went upstairs with me, and laid down on the empty floor. He was tired and needed some place to rest. Later, he came and asked me to pet him. I didn't have much food left there, but I gave him some, too. When he saw me on Tuesday, he ran towards me again, but this time crying loudly. I know from other people living there, that he keeps coming to my door and cries.

So I want to steal him, and I asked Yi "What should be my approach in this situation?" I got 56.3 to 35.

What do you all think?

Thank you in advance,

Sylwia
